A water leak in most residential homes can be difficult to detect as pipework is usually buried underground or concealed in walls and roof spaces.
A simple way to check for a possible water leak is by performing a basic water meter reading test.
To perform the test, follow the steps below;
- Ensure all taps within your home are turned off and not dripping
- Read your water meter and record the reading. Taking a photo with your phone is the best option
- Do not use any water in your home, including the toilet whilst conducting the test
- Read your water meter again and compare readings. If the second reading is different to the first there may be a water leak within your system
Note: for best results, run the test for approximately 2 hours.

Outside your home
Check all external walls and paths for dampness or wet spots, check for damp soil, patches of greener lawn (more than usual), leaking irrigation (sprinklers and drippers), leaking garden taps and pressurised hoses.
Inside your home
Check for blistering plaster, damp discoloured or warped walls, floor boards & carpet, check under your vanity units and kitchen cupboards, washing machine and dishwasher hose connections, and of course leaking toilets & taps.
